“Algae” can grow in your diesel fuel tank
Diesel fuel tanks and storage systems play a very important role in fleet operations.
If you use diesel in your truck or fleet, you’ve probably heard about “There is algae in my diesel tank”. These are called Microbial growth in fuel storage is triggered by fungal and bacterial growth. They look like algae, but it’s not.
Sulfur acts as a natural biocide that helps prevent microbial growth in diesel fuel tanks.
What is Surfur?
Sulfur (S), also spelled sulphur, a non-metallic chemical element belonging to the oxygen group, one of the most reactive of the elements. Pure sulfur is a tasteless, odourless, brittle solid that is pale yellow in colour, a poor conductor of electricity, and insoluble in water.
Removing the sulfur makes the fuel much less resistant to fuel microbes — fungus, mould, and bacteria.
How do you prevent bacterial growth in diesel fuel?
The easiest way to prevent microbial growth is to limit the amount of water in the storage tank. Check tank bottoms for water every month initially, decreasing frequency if no water is found. Tanks should be checked for water at least twice a year.
Also, to avoid microbial growth in your diesel tank, you can start using our APW Diesel GoldTM that contains Ultra Low Sulfur, alternatively you can manually drain or chemically clean your tank. The use of a biocide may be necessary in combination with high-pressure washing.

What is Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD)?
ULSD is a cleaner-burning fuel than Low-Sulfur Diesel, containing 97% less sulfur and improving the longevity of motors previously damaged by the higher sulfur content.
Sulfur in diesel fuel must be lowered to meet the standards with modern pollution-control technology being installed on later model diesel engines. The equipment will reduce fine particles (soot) and pollutants in diesel exhaust by over 90%.
Benefits for your fuel system:
- Clean your fuel tank
- Clean the injectors
- Clean the fuel rail
APW Diesel GOLDTM delivers an optimum burn rate, which gives you more kilometres per litre for you, and helps to lubricate your sensitive fuel system components.
Other benefits include:
- Fuel savings between up to 9%
- Power increases up to 7%
- Reduction in engine noise up to 15%
- Black smoke reduction up to 15%
- Decrease in emissions up to 21%
APW Diesel GoldTM offers ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel with a sulphur level as low as 10 parts per million (ppm) – the most environmentally and clean diesel fuel option – and it saves you money.
